TYPICAL KDEG (Kentuckiana Digital Experimenter's Group) RADIO STATION

1) VHF/UHF Radio - the club has some radio's to offer up for use. These are commercial radios being modded to work on our freqs.

2) Nino TNC - USB 5v power to TNC -USB TYPE-B on the Board, this is Fed from RasPi

  • Unit has DB9 Female connection on the board that goes to Radio

3) Raspberry Pi - depending on the version of Pi you have, you will need a 2.5A to 3.5A power supply for it.

  • This unit can run multiple packet stations by adding on a powered USB hub for connections to multiple TNC and radios.
  • Possibly a USB powered hub for more availablity of connections.
  • RASPI can be run headless after it is all setup. * SETUP will require a monitor, keyboard, mouse.
  • Cat5 cable from router to RasPi for initial setup
  • I think a Windows Laptop will work as well, others can chime in here. The idea of using the Pi as station control, is power requirements and space needed is minimual. Whole station could be made into portable.
  • RASPI is dedicated to system, leaving the PC to be used for other things.

4) Yagi antenna - can be homemade for just a few dollars

  • Coax from radio to antenna

5) All gear will be dedicated (24/7) to the network to enable full time performance. Also need to make plans for battery backup power. ECOMMS is the ulimate goal we have, to serve our communities in times of need.

NOTES:

  • I plan on getting 3 total packet links for the network.

1) Realised I need a Power supply dedicated for this. The possibilty of all 3 radios transmitting at the same time could happen. A 20 Amp power supply should be suffiecent for this.

BE aware that if you have multiple radios operating under one power supply like I do, when adding a second link the possiblity of 2 radios transmitting will exist ! So be aware of our AMP draw for the 2 radios !
I have a 35 Amp power supply, max draw on any radio is 15 Amps.
Estimated draw from packet node radio = 6 Amps max.
So I will be ok, just wanted to create an awareness, this is new to me.
    • there will be misc cables needed

1) Female DB9 to USB cable, from radio (commercial radio) to TNC 2) Cat5 cable from router to RasPi for initial setup 3) USB-A TO USB-B Cable, from RasPi to TNC

CONNECTION ARE AS FOLLOWS:

RADIO TO ANTENNA RADIO TO TNC TNC TO RASPI RASPI TO INTERNET ROUTER - system will not depend on Internet to function*

POWER REQUIREMENTS :

RADIO - 13.8 VOLTS POSSIBLE 6 AMP DRAW -- From Radio Power supply powered by 120 Volts RASPI - 5 VOLTS 2.5 TO 3.5 AMPS -- From Pi Power supply powered by 120 volts
